Older SME Servers
1.Hit Control-X at the boot menu (logo) to get a 'boot:' prompt
2.Hit TAB to list the kernels available to load
3.Type the name of one of them (not the smp) EXACTLY as displayed followed by the word 'single'

4.Run 'fsck /' or other commands as necessary
5.It will report the errors it finds and ask if you want them fixed. It might be a good idea to make a note of any that relate to data on the drive.
6.Once completed, type 'exit' or 'reboot' to continue
7.If still no good, try upgrade routine

Note: you won't have SSH access in Single-User Mode. You need to be at the console.
Get into Single-User Mode:
- At the GRUB splash screen at boot time, press any key to enter the GRUB interactive menu.
- Select the version of the kernel that you wish to boot and type 'a' to append the line.
- Go to the end of the line and type 'single' as a separate word (press the [Spacebar] and then type single).
- Press [Enter] to exit edit mode and boot into Single User Mode
Another way, if you are already booted to a Linux command prompt:
- telinit 1
