Resolving Printer Problems

E-mail Print PDF

Here are some basic steps that will resolve the majority of printer problems.

Do not underestimate the importance of every one of these recommendations!

  1. Turn the printer off at the main power switch or unplug it from the wall to be sure.
  1. Remove all the paper trays and open all the doors/panels.
  1. Inspect all openings (paper path) for any bits of paper and carefully remove them.  In some cases, it is necessary to remove the drum/kit in order to see the bits of paper.
  1. It is a good idea to locate the paper sensor(s) and blow the paper dust out of it.
  1. Carefully reinstall any components previously removed making sure they all seat properly.
  1. Close all the doors and panels.
  1. Inspect the paper in the paper trays.  If there is ANY deformation of the paper, replace it.  When filling the paper trays, be sure to fan the paper (both ends) to separate the pages.  Carefully organize the paper and fill the tray.  Do not overfill.  Using thicker paper than 'normal' may exacerbate the problems.  FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH ALL THESE POINTS IS THE MOST COMMON PROBLEM WITH PRINTERS.
  1. Carefully adjust (adjustable) paper trays to the proper paper size. Some paper trays can be easily knocked out of the proper position. Failure to do this may result in the printer not recognizing that the paper is loaded.
  1. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.  Test.
  1. Store paper carefully (flat) in the original wrapping.  Paper readily absorbs moisture from the air and deforms, particularly during monsoon (wet) time.
  1. Use high quality (original manufacturer) toners and supplies. Failure to to do this will probably end in frustration and extra costs.
  1. Use high quality paper.  Lower quality paper seems to loose more paper dust into the printer and this is a common cause of problems. Paper dust also clogs paper sensors.
