These are just some quick notes for how to test your mail server to make sure it is not an 'open relay' that spammers can abuse.
SMTP Relay Testing
Two tools for open-relay testing:
mail-abuse.org
This is an easy-to-run test and will detect most open relays.
Run this command from the mail server to be tested.
telnet relay-test.mail-abuse.org
There are 19 tests. It stops after a test doesn't fail.
monkeys.com
Download the MRT tester.
It is a perl script. It shows several vulnerabilities. You can use their test patterns or create your own. Has both terse and verbose output options. This has about 27 tests in the default patterns.
