Favorite Firefox Add-Ons

E-mail Print PDF

Firefox is a great web browser! Many people find Firefox vastly superior to Internet Explorer. You may be missing out if you haven't tried it.

One of the best features of Firefox is its cool cross-platform add-on architecture. Cross-platform means the add-ons usually work on different platforms like Mac, Windows or Linux.

Number One

Long ago, I determined that I can't live without a tool to manage my bookmarks. I used to use Bookmark Sync and Sort, which still works great. But I found a different bookmarks management tool that's even easier to use: Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer.

With this add-on installed, you'll never loose your collection of bookmarks again. It even allows you to access your bookmarks from any PC using a web browser.

You can even synchronize your bookmarks with multiple computers if you wish. For example, I have the same favorites (bookmarks) on my office PC, my notebook PC and my home PC with an absolute minimum of time or trouble.

If you choose to use Bookmark Sync and Sort and you have an e-mail account on our mail server, you also have your own private FTP (file transfer protocol) space all ready to upload your bookmarks. When configuring the add-on, just add:

  • Host - mail.sonoracomm.com
  • Username - same as your e-mail username
    • probably the part of your e-mail address before the @ sign
  • Password - same as your e-mail password

Number Two

Flashblock is a cool add-on that replaces those annoying (but often useful) flash animations in web pages with a simple button that allows you to view the animation at your leisure.

Since most Flash animations are annoying ads, this has the effect of you seeing fewer ads! Try it! You'll never browse without it again.

Number Three

FireFTP is a simple and useful FTP client. If you ever need an FTP client, this is the easiest way to get and use one. Why install yet another large application on your PC when FireFTP will do?

Number Four

DownThemAll! is a download manager for Firefox. If you ever download large files, you have probably experienced a corrupted or hung download before. Without a download manager, you have to redo your download from scratch wasting time and bandwidth.

Number Five

If you ever work on web pages, there is another add-on that helps you troubleshoot and make modifications. It's called FireBug.
