Thunderbird POP Mail Client Setup
This procedure will help you configure the Mozilla Thunderbird mail client for a Sonora Comm e-mail account.
DO NOT misspell anything. Case is important. You have been warned.
It is important to note that there are extra security measures in place that require you to use secure settings (SSL) if you are connecting to our mail server from a remote network. In other words, if you access your mail from a PC connected to the Internet via an ISP other than Sonora Comm, you must use secure settings (see below). This is for your protection.
Getting Started
Open Thunderbird. Click Tools -> Account Settings.

Click Add Account if you are starting from scratch. Otherwise, select the proper mail account and go to Server Settings to make the following changes.

Select 'E-Mail Account', then click Next.

Enter your name and your e-mail address. Click Next.

Select POP and enter the mail server name as shown. Click Next.

Enter your user name. This will usually be the first part of your e-mail address...the part before the @ symbol.

The account name is arbitrary. The default is fine. Click Next.

Check the summary for errors, then click Finish.

On the left, click on 'Outgoing Server (SMTP)'. Click Add. You will almost never want more than one SMTP server configured as things can get confusing if you do.

Enter the description and server name as shown.
Be sure to select Use name and password and enter your same User Name,

Make 'Sonora SMTP' the default SMTP server, then remove any others that may have existed previously.
Secure Settings
If you want to access your e-mail from a machine connected to another ISP, you must use secure protocols to do it. TLS is slightly easier to set up, but our mail server also supports SSL.
The following graphics show the minor differences in settings to accomplish secure connections.
Click 'Server Settings' for the Sonora Comm account.

For secure connections, select TLS or SSL.
Make sure the port is 995 if you use SSL. Leave the port at 25 for TLS.

For secure outbound connections, select TLS or SSL,
Make sure the outbound port is 465 if you use SSL. Leave the port at 25 for TLS.
